Marvel working on a New Warriors TV series featuring Squirrel Girl
Fans of Squirrel Girl rejoice! According to a report over at TV Line, it looks like Marvel and ABC Studios are working on a New Warriors comedy series which would put the spotlight on the fan-favorite (but little-known-to-the-world-at-large) character.
Both Marvel and ABC Studios have declined to comment on the news, so take this with the appropriate dose of salt, but it seems that sources have confirmed to the site that they were shopping around the half-hour TV project to various cable and streaming sites.
The New Warriors are described as a junior version of the Avengers since they are made up of teenagers and young adults, one of whom is Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl. The character can not only communicate with squirrels (I just love those little rodents. So cute. But once again, I digress); she also possesses super-strength and super-speed. In the comics, the character would even go on to become the nanny of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones’ daughter.
Two actresses have recently come forward expressing interest in playing the character: Stranger Things’ Shannon Purser (who has just been cast on The CW’s Riverdale) and Anna Kendrick. Kendrick even has the support of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War helmers Joe and Anthony Russo, who said Kendrick would be “perfect casting.” If Squirrel Girl does indeed come to television with a New Warriors TV series, I highly doubt that Kendrick would sign on.
