    Johnson Trade Hinges On Ruling
The Joe Johnson saga moves to Atlanta Hawks co-owner Steve Belkin's hometown court today in Boston, where litigation prolongs two NBA front offices' frustration.

A ruling this morning could strip Belkin's power as the Hawks' NBA governor. If so, the Johnson trade to which the Suns agreed July 31 could become a reality today.

Belkin, who has a 30 percent ownership stake, blocked a deal that would send Johnson to Atlanta for guard Boris Diaw, two first-round picks with lottery protections and a $4.9 million trade exception. When Belkin learned last week that his co-owners planned to remove him as governor, he received a temporary restraining order in Suffolk County (Mass.) Superior Court.

Belkin seeks a preliminary injunction against his co-owners, who back the trade. Atlanta's eight other owners hope to prove Belkin's refusal to sign off on a trade is a legally binding action against the wishes of the partnership's majority.

"All of us on the inside understand (Belkin's position) is a ploy," Hawks General Manager Billy Knight told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It has nothing to do with the trade itself. It has nothing to do with the terms of the trade. He has told me a number of times, in meetings and in private, that he would like to keep the payroll at the bare minimum - not sign free agents.

"He (Johnson) is a big-time player who wants to come to Atlanta. That's a powerful message when he wants to play with us. For someone to try to waylay that and get in the way of that - to me, it's unforgivable."

Belkin has said his problem is giving up two first-round picks, not the $69.6 million offer the Hawks made to Johnson.

la verdad q yo no los entiendo a los gm de los equipos de la nba, dan a jaric x cassell q esta baqueteadisimo, y viejo
The Minnesota Timberwolves traded aging point guard Sam Cassell and a conditional first-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night for guards Marko Jaric and Lionel Chalmers.

    Sam Cassell
    Cassell

The deal ends a two-year, up-and-down stint in Minnesota for Cassell, who helped lead the team to the Western Conference finals in 2003-04 after arriving in a trade with Milwaukee.

But Cassell began to wear out his welcome last season, complaining about his lack of a contract extension when training camp started and then struggling through an injury-plagued season at age 35 while averaging 13.5 points and 5.1 assists in 59 games. The Wolves missed the playoffs for the first time since 1996.

"Last year was a disappointing year," Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale said. "It was time to go in another direction."

Jaric, a 6-foot-7 guard from Serbia-Montenegro, was a restricted free agent who was signed by the Clippers before the trade. He averaged a career-high 9.9 points, 6.1 assists and 33.1 minutes for Los Angeles last season.

McHale said the Timberwolves targeted Jaric all offseason, calling him as soon as free agency opened on Aug. 1.

"We really like Marko," McHale said. "He's very versatile."

Versatility is something new coach Dwane Casey covets, and McHale said Casey lobbied hard for the team to go after Jaric.

Jaric is also considered a better defender at the point than Cassell, a big plus for the Timberwolves, who were picked apart by opposing point guards all last season.

"Marko is a big guard who can see over the defense, and he can defend both the point guard and shooting guard position," Casey said in a statement issued by the team. "We feel we've really upgraded our defense and our team with the addition of Marko."

Chalmers appeared in 36 games for the Clippers as a rookie last season, averaging 3.1 points, 1.4 assists and 12.0 minutes.

The first-round pick is lottery protected, so if Minnesota misses the playoffs again this season the Timberwolves will hang on to that selection.

McHale said the Timberwolves were also close to re-signing free agent forward Eddie Griffin. And with the addition of Jaric, Griffin and Nikoloz Tskitishvili, McHale was comfortable giving up the first-round pick.

"Our young base is pretty solid," McHale said. "We have plenty of young big guys, so I think we're in pretty good shape.

as usual bringin some pretty sweet news (ok hagan como q nunca dije eso)
After an off-season that has went on spurts of its own, it appears the final push is being made. Close sources to HOOPSWORLD.com has learned that moves are in motion that will finish up a large portion of the free agent market

First, the big fish left in the pond is Michael Finley. He is expected to name the Miami Heat as the winner for his services. The sides are believed to be close to a 3-year deal at the MLE which will keep Finley in South Beach, supplementing his long-term buyout plan with Dallas. Maverick's owner Mark Cuban is believed to offer accelerated the payment schedule with Finley because of his move to the Eastern Conference. The Heat would then be shooters around Shaquille O'Neal, with Finley added to Dwyane Wade, Antoine Walker, Jason Williams, and James Posey. No word yet on whether the Heat will petition the NBA to play with two balls at the same time.

The move by the Heat for Finley may send Damon Jones north as he is then expected to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers have approximately $3.7 million left under the salary cap and have been searching all summer for a shooter at point guard position to play off LeBron James. Jones is reportedly already house hunting in Cleveland, as no one else has been looking to pay him the big money he was seeking.
es solamente un rumor. no se, yo mucho no lo creo
    saludos
