It's now January of 2005 and the PSP is still nowhere to be found. Unless you happen to be at a store when shipments arrive (or you, perhaps, live in the remote "inaka"), you have as much a chance of getting a PSP now as you did at launch: zero.

Did Sony Computer Entertainment screw up and not produce the number of systems it had promised? Apparently not. In comments shared with the press today, SCE president Ken Kutaragi revealed that SCE was able to ship out 510,000 systems by the end of December. This number is 10,000 more than had originally been promised.

While hardware sales were limited by supply, Kutaragi is apparently pleased with sales on the software side. He states, "We expected hardware to be insufficient, but we were able to sell more software than expected." According to Kutaragi, some PSP titles managed to top the 200,000 mark.

Kutaragi comments that the primary reason for hardware shortages was the low supply of the PSP's graphics chip, which is manufactured internally at the company's Japanese fabrication facilities. The PSP chips are produced on a 90 nanometer production line which is at the forefront of technology at Sony's plants, and it was thus difficult to increase production.

Those waiting for the PSP's American launch won't have to wait too long. Kutaragi stated today that the PSP is on schedule to see release in Europe and America some time March. That means just a couple months waiting!

SCE hopes to sell 3,000,000 PSP units worldwide by early April, Kutaragi reiterated today. This number could rise if SCE can increase production at its plants.

Nintendo might have had a big handheld holiday with their DS, but Sony has started the New Year off with a bang by unveiling a ton of new info for their upcoming PSP system at the Consumer Electronics Show not one week into 2005. GR was there to lay our quivering hands on the sleek new system and check out what looks like a good representation of its initial launch library.

Boasting processing power that rivals the PS2 and a set of features that makes your new cell phone look like a Fisher-Price reject, the PSP is obviously packing a lot of punch in its slender frame. But all the spec lists in the world don't paint the whole picture, which we will attempt to do in one simple phrase:

The screen rules.

We're not kidding. The 4.3 inch LCD screen takes up most of the PSP's front side real estate, and for very good reason. By way of 480 x 272 resolution and 16.8 million colors, the PSP screen is capable of producing visuals that far exceed what we've seen from the other handhelds - including the DS. It even allows for 16:9 aspect ratio, making it feel like a miniature version of a flat-screen TV.

According to most of the developers on hand, that high resolution leads to easily programmable graphics since they don't have to spend so much time smoothing out every single texture. One team even admitted that their good-looking lead character was comprised of only 16 colors (not 16-bit, mind you). We don't know whether or not such a shortcut will come back to bite them in the kiester, but from what we saw, we wouldn't bet on it.

You will occasionally forget you're playing a handheld device rather than a full console. It's that cool.

What's far less cool is the fact that Sony still refuses to announce a firm ship date or pricing structure, instead focusing much of its CES debut on the alternative uses of the PSP as a camera (requiring a separate purchase, of course) and MP3 player. With a USB 2.0 port, IPod-esque headphones, an IR port and full 802.11b Wi-Fi compatibility, there isn't much missing from the package. As for the battery life issue, well, that's a tough one to weigh in on until the system officially ships in North America this Spring.

However, we didn't attend the event to swim around in rumors - we were there to dive into the pool of games. Sony has been dodgy about which titles will officially be available at launch, but after enduring several hours worth of confusing double-talk from the GR staff, some of the developers on hand spilled the proverbial beans. In other words, by no means is the following breakdown official.

We'll be covering specific titles in greater detail as we get closer to the system's launch, but for now, feast your eyes on the next generation of handheld glory.

El Coded Arms tiene mucha pinta, pero eso nada más, pinta. Por lo demás, copien sus topics de PS2 y cambienle el 2 por una P, van a ver que resulta en lo mismo. Al menos por ahora.
