The Guardians of the Galaxy won’t return to the big screen until 2017, but their cartoon counterparts will hit the small one later this year. Disney XD has just revealed the first GOTG animated series poster, along with the premiere date for the new show. Get it all after the jump.
IGN debuted the GOTG animated series poster. The show was first announced at last year’s Comic-Con, though Marvel Animation had been laying the groundwork for some time before that.
Guardians of the Galaxy officially debuts Saturday, September 26 with two back-to-back episodes airing at 9:30 PM and 10 PM. But viewers will get a sneak peek at the first episode weeks earlier, on Saturday, September 5. And before that, they’ll get acquainted with the Guardians through a series of character shorts which will air throughout August on Disney XD.
The voice cast for the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series includes Will Friedle as Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, David Sobolov as Drax the Destroyer, Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot, and James Arnold Taylor as Yondu and Cosmo.
Descriptions for the first two episodes are as follows:
“Road to Knowhere” – The newly-christened Guardians of the Galaxy come into possession of a dangerous artifact that has Thanos’ new lieutenant, Korath, after them.
“Knowhere to Run” — The Guardians struggle to subdue the suddenly-sprung-to-life Celestial head that is the Knowhere space colony, as well as storm Korath’s ship to rescue Quill, Gamora and the mysterious CryptoCube that holds the Cosmic Seed.
As with other Marvel animated series, the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy show is not part of the MCU. But if you’re impatient to join Star-Lord and his friends on some new adventures, it should make for a fun side trip. Here’s the synopsis for the series as a whole:
“Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” features themes of redemption and the importance of friendships and family told through a series of riveting sequential story arcs. The series follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.
